Pallet flipping means buying a pallet of liquidation stock (customer returns, shelf pulls or overstock) and reselling what’s on it one item at a time. The number to work out before you buy is your landed cost per item: the lot price plus freight, divided by the item count. On seven of our pallets on September 30, 2026, that ran from $1.31 to $232.50 an item delivered in Georgia.
The mistake we see most often is doing that sum with the lot price alone. A $500 pallet isn’t a $500 purchase once it’s on a truck, and the items that turn out damaged or missing parts still count in the divisor. This guide works through the real numbers from our shop in Dalton, GA, and the parts of flipping that go wrong.
What a pallet costs per item before you sell anything
These are live lots from our liquidation pallets page, with our standard freight added: $25 to the Southeast and $85 to the West Coast. The item counts are the ones on each listing.
| Lot | Condition on the listing | Price | Items | Per item, before freight | Landed per item, Georgia | Landed per item, California |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lululemon clothing pallet | New with tags; overstock and shelf pulls | $500 | 400 | $1.25 | $1.31 | $1.46 |
| Kids clothing pallet | Brand new with tags, sealed | $450 | 200 | $2.25 | $2.38 | $2.68 |
| Power tool pallet | Mixed | $750 | 300 | $2.50 | $2.58 | $2.78 |
| Amazon general merchandise pallet | Brand new | $500 | 90 to 100 | $5.00 to $5.56 | $5.25 to $5.83 | $5.85 to $6.50 |
| DeWALT tool pallet | Mixed | $700 | 50 | $14.00 | $14.50 | $15.70 |
| Laptop pallet | Grade A | $1,200 | 24 | $50.00 | $51.04 | $53.54 |
| iPhone 14 Pro Max pallet | Mixed | $2,300 | 10 | $230.00 | $232.50 | $238.50 |
Two things stand out. Freight hardly moves the per-item cost on a 300- or 400-piece pallet, but it adds $3.54 an item to a 24-laptop pallet going to California. And the cheapest cost per item is on clothing, where each piece also sells for the least, so a low number here says nothing on its own about what you’ll clear.
Delivery add-ons change the maths on small pallets. Liftgate delivery is $65 and residential delivery with a liftgate is $160; on the kids clothing pallet going to a house in Georgia, that takes the landed cost from $475 to $635, or $3.18 an item. Our pallet shipping cost guide has every rate by state.
Mixed condition means some items won’t sell
Every lot we list carries one condition: brand new, overstock, shelf pulls, customer returns, or mixed. A new-with-tags clothing pallet is close to what it says. A lot listed as mixed or customer returns is the one to price carefully, because some items will be used, damaged, missing parts or not working, and the listing gives you a condition, not a count of working units.
That matters for flipping because you can’t check the items before you pay. On September 30, 2026, 81 of the 83 pallets and truckloads in our shop were unmanifested, meaning there’s no item-by-item list, only a description and an approximate count. Our liquidation manifest guide covers what that changes, and what shelf pulls are explains the grades that sit between new and returned.
A simple way to price the risk: redo the per-item sum assuming only part of a mixed lot sells. If 40 of the 50 tools on the DeWALT pallet turn out sellable, your landed cost in Georgia goes from $14.50 to $18.13 a tool. That 40 is a what-if to test your own numbers, not a figure we’ve counted.
Will you make money flipping pallets?
We can’t tell you, and a seller who promises you will is guessing. We know what our lots cost and how many items are on them. We don’t know what you’ll sell each item for, how long it’ll take, or what your selling fees are, and we don’t track what our buyers resell for.
What you can do before you order is compare your landed cost per item with what the same items have actually sold for recently where you plan to sell them, after that platform’s fees and your shipping. If the gap only works when every item sells, the lot is too tight.
What you need before the pallet arrives
- A way to get it off the truck. The flat rate assumes a dock or a forklift. Without one, choose liftgate delivery at checkout, or the driver can’t unload.
- Floor space. A pallet of 300 pieces needs room to be unwrapped, sorted into sell, repair and scrap piles, and photographed.
- Time. Every item on a 400-piece pallet has to be checked, listed and shipped by you.
- A place to sell. Flippers sell on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Whatnot, at flea markets, or through a bin store. Check each platform’s selling rules before you list branded goods.
What happens if a pallet disappoints
Returns work two ways, and the difference matters to flippers. Within 7 days of delivery or pickup, an unopened, still-wrapped order can come back for any reason; you pay the return freight and a 10 percent restocking fee. If you open a pallet and it isn’t what you ordered, you can still return it within those 7 days, and we pay the return freight; the 10 percent fee applies there too. What you can’t send back is an opened pallet that matches its listing but didn’t sell the way you hoped.
Freight damage is different. If a pallet arrives 30 percent or more damaged, note it on the driver’s receipt, send us photos within 48 hours, and we refund the damaged share; freight isn’t refunded. Items that simply don’t work on a lot listed as mixed or customer returns aren’t damage in that sense, because the listing already told you the condition. The full terms are in our refund and returns policy.
One pallet or a truckload to start?
Start with one pallet. It ships like any other order, and it shows you how long sorting and listing actually takes before you commit more money. Pick a category you already know how to price: a clothing seller reading a clothing pallet will spot the good pieces faster than on a mixed tool pallet.
Truckloads suit buyers with a warehouse, a forklift and an outlet for volume, such as a bin store. Ours ran from $6,500 to $23,950 on September 30, 2026, plus $1,000 to $5,500 freight by region. The $6,500 Amazon general merchandise truckload is about 24 gaylord pallets of mixed customer returns, shelf pulls and overstock: $270.83 a gaylord before freight, $312.50 landed in Florida and $500 in Arizona. Before buying one, run through the 8 things our buyer checks on a truckload.
